There are also estimates of the average unit costs for different types of crime, which vary widely. For example, the average cost of a homicide is estimated to be £1,100,000 while the cost of an average burglary is estimated to be £2,300. These average costs are also broken down across costs: in anticipation; as a consequence; and in response to crime. Of particular interest to policy-makers and managers working in the fields of community safety and criminal justice is the estimated breakdown of these average unit costs across different agencies. So, for example, the average cost of a sexual offence is estimated at £19,000 and of this £1,200 is the average cost health services incur as a consequence of such a crime. A further £3,900 is the estimated cost of the criminal justice system’s response to such a crime. This is further broken down; the average cost of police activity is estimated to be £1,900 and the average Crown Court costs to be £180. If some of these figures seem low it should be remembered they are average costs and therefore reflect the relatively low proportion of sexual offences which are reported to the police and the even lower level of such offences which will result in a Crown Court trial.
